Whatever is this, you people who know about plants? It towers above a neighbour's garden and mostly the light means I see it only in silhouette. I couldn't believe it when I saw the sun on it. Astonishing thing.

Four months ago I wrote wishfully in my diary for yesterday, 'Transplant peonies'. Now is the time to do it but I thought it was very unlikely that come September I'd still have access to my old garden. But I do, so today I dug holes where my sadly blighted tomatoes were until a few days ago, cycled with a fork on my back to my old garden and dug up and split some of the peony tubers. By the time I'd finished tucking them into their new home it was dark. I'll check on them in the morning and wish them well.
