Terrific Tuesday
We were standing at the back door ready to go out to the garden to pick tomatoes and cut back potato plants for harvesting in two weeks when Mrs. P said “Go get your camera”. Of course I asked why instead of doing what I was told...I’m sure if my mother were here she’d say this flaw has been evident since early childhood • Three male Northern Yellow-Shafted Flickers were foraging for ants in our backyard! It’s the first time we’ve seen them here • They are a member of the woodpecker family, mainly feed on the ground, and migrate south in winter • Speaking of winter, say hello to the Woolly Bear Caterpillar! We found him sleeping under a squash leaf. He will freeze solid to overwinter, then in spring he will thaw and transform in to an Isabella Tiger Moth • Legend is he’s a predictor of winter weather. The wider the rusty brown band the milder the coming winter • What do you think? • I think we’d better buy a bigger shovel!
