Addendum: at 7.50 pm , as I sat down to the remains of my sister’s stuffed peppers and my courgettes I rushed outside to watch a skyfull of geese flying across the darkening sky and onto the marsh. I knew they’d come. I waved to them and was barely able to breathe, crying with a mix of happiness and grief.
