Day 258/20. The ominous SR-71.
A visit today to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford.
The Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" is a long-range, high-altitude, strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed and manufactured by the American aerospace company Lockheed Corporation. It was operated by both the United States Air Force and NASA.
Capable of cruising at speeds in excess of Mach 3.2, the SR-71 was the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft to ever to see operational service. But even though its performance has never been matched, the SR-71 was retired as the Cold War drew to a close.
It was, and still is, the fastest manned jet aircraft ever made.
This is the only SR-71 on display outside the USA. Impressive and ominous....
