I also went to an interesting evening talk on software optimisation of industrial plants in the petroleum industry. I have absolutely no background in the oil & gas industry, but used to know a bit about optimisation techniques. So I wasn't totally lost. Take home message? These plants are already pretty optimal thanks to the experience of the operators.
