Sawmill Visit
Last week the emphasis of the cabinet making course was tools and how to choose and care for them. This week , on a more advanced course, the lunchtime lectures are based on wood and how to choose and care for it. A feature of the week is a trip to a local sawmill.
Chippy is well known to this long-standing family-run business and they allowed him to take the 3 of us on a tour of their premises. They are manufacturers as well as timber merchants so they are really knowledgeable about timber. Chippy stressed the importance of getting to know your local timber merchant and asking them for the cuts you require.
This picture shows a tree being prepared for cutting into slabs on the bandsaw. About 18" of timber with shakes was removed from each end before it was sawn.
My own project require less wood than this! I have glued the first stage of my piece together. It measures approx 20" x 12" x 9" and will, no doubt, be blipped.
