Pancake Day
Today is Pancake Tuesday. Now, I knew that Pancake Tuesday had some kind of association with religion, but I had no idea why. Wikipedia to the rescue - Pancake Tuesday is the last day that adherents can use up all the nice fatty foods they have in the house before they have to start giving it all up for Lent. If they didn't use it, it would just go to waste.
So, today I have learned something!
I also tried making pancakes. Scottish pancakes - supposed to be much thicker and smaller in diameter than their English counterparts. And certainly not to be "tossed"
As you can see, this wasn't an unqualified success. They went too thin, and I think that my griddle was too hot. So next time, I'll make the batter a little thicker, the griddle cooler and maybe add a touch more baking powder (and some more sugar).
But even if they weren't perfect, they were still pretty tasty!
