Learning to sign in Nepal

Ten year-old Param has profound hearing loss. She lives with her family in a village in Nepal. Her impoverished parents work the fields from early morning to evening.

IMPACT Nepal has been teaching Param sign language so that she can communicate with those around her. She has gained enough confidence to go to school and can now express her ideas and feelings.

Interestingly, our local fieldworker describes how Param is helping to challenge her whole community's attitude towards those with disabilities. Whereas her family used to be victimised due to superstitious beliefs, 'everybody in the community has started loving Param and helps her in need. Their attitude towards disable people has been totally change due to the awareness programme launched by IMPACT Nepal'.
