St. Francis Mariners

I thought I'd do something a little different today and feature our City's High School. You'll find High Schools like this all across the U.S.  Our daughter went here and it was really convenient because our house is literally a 5 minute walk to the school if you take the shortcut. It's also where I walk during the winter when it's too cold and icy to be outside. They open the school 4 nights a week for anyone who wants to "walk the halls". The school was built on a beautiful piece of land--the highest point in our city--and overlooked Lake Michigan. The cafeteria and library were built with floor to ceiling windows to maximize the gorgeous view. But, in a fiercely contended move, the city council voted to sell the long, narrow parcel of land that borders the lakeshore to developers. The top left and middle pictures show the present view....or should I say LACK of view....now available from the school. It's a bit of an optical illusion as the land looks level, but in the top middle picture, where you see the evergreen trees is where the hill slowly descends down to Lake Drive, and all the apartments are on the East side of the street. There are 2 more huge complexes to the left of these in the pictures, effectively blocking most of the views of the lake for those of us who live nearby. The top right photo shows a few of the schools' tennis courts, and the middle picture shows the "Mariners"--the name of the school's sports teams, as well as the mascot. He always makes me laugh, as he looks like Popeye after he's eaten his spinach! The bottom left shows part of the football field and the bleachers for the opposing teams' fans; the middle photo is of the bleachers for the "home" team fans, and you may notice that there's also a track around the perimeter of the field for track and field events. The last photo is the all important score board. I used to go to a lot of their football games as my daughter was on the Pom squad & they cheered on the sidelines during the game, and performed on the field during time outs and half time. Fun times!   :))
