A Passage To .... Matlock Bath

Fuelled by a very large and tasty full English breakfast we walked into Matlock this morning where these tuktuks outside an Indian restaurant contrasted nicely with the classical architecture.

From here we headed up over High Tor with fine views of Riber Hall (see extra), which local factory owner Joseph Smedley had built as a family home in the 1800s without thinking how hard it would be to pump water up so high, and down into Matlock Bath. We ignored the sign to The Bum (other extra) as we'd heard it wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

Matlock Bath still retains its Victorian touristy charm (think Blackpool comes to Ironbridge) and we enjoyed a wander along the river and a coffee before making the return climb up High Tor.

Back in Matlock we spotted a cast iron log holder to replace our basket in the wonderfully named Blood Brothers wood stove store (no sign of Willy Russell) so made the last two miles of our walk back more challenging by taking turns to carry it back to the B&B. Chalked up nearly 10 miles in all.

Another fine meal at the local pub tonight with a different and equally tasty beer on tap, courtesy of Bradfield Brewery.
