Frog Orchid
To be read in an over-excited voice....... This morning I was watching the last of the Chalk Hill Blue butterflies flitting along a chalk path on the Downs when I noticed one had settled. I went in for a closer look and was amazed to see that it had landed on a tiny Frog Orchid. All of two cm high its the first Frog orchid I've seen this year. It was a great surprise to find it in flower in September (it usually peaks in July) and at a site where I've never seen it before. Even more surprising, it was less than a metre from the Musk Orchid that I found in July. Looking around I found another five, but all the others had gone to seed.
