Looking out for Chormans...

We took a longish walk today from the car park at Noses Point, down to the Blast Beach and back along the cliff tops; the Durham Coastal Footpath.  A beautiful walk.  


Along from Nose's Point once stood the Seaham Iron Works and blast furnaces, built in 1862 by the Londonderry family.  The slag from the furnaces often ended up on Blast Beach just to the south of Nose's Point.  The site of the furnaces is noticeable by the predominance of red scorched rocks on the shore.


The casemate style pill box would have held several Vickers machine gun positions. This one was built in 1940/41 to repel German invaders from across the North Sea.  Seaham was an attractive enemy  target because of the mining and harbour.
