Dusk

On my way to work, I pass a cart from which a man sells snacks and cigarettes, often accompanied by his little boy, Atem. Atem is rosy-cheeked and smiley, both shy and eager to engage.

I came by at dusk and a group of men and boys were clustered around a fire, seeking warmth from the evening chill.

In Gaza, fathers spend a lot of time with their sons, who often accompany them to work. In at least two attacks during the war last November, young boys were killed alongside their fathers.

In one such attack, on 18 November, Suhail Aashour Mohammed Hamada, 42, and his 10-year-old child, were killed when their water distribution truck was hit with two missiles.
