Killed In Action.

I was taking photos in the churchyard at High Beech today. I was pulled up with a jolt when I noticed the inscription on a snow covered stone. I brushed some snow away. Ernest Marden was killed in action on Hill 60 in May 1915. It was probably a warm sunny day in northern France and he would have been thinking of home, close to Epping Forest. Ernest was 21.

And here I am enjoying the fruits of his sacrifice. It made me pause and think for a few minutes.
