Ampelmann

After reunification, most East German objects seems to be gladly discarded in favour of those from the West.

But one thing has remained - the friendly, green man from pedestrian crossings in the city, the Ampelmann.

He was designed in the early 1960's by traffic psychologist, Karl Peglau, on the basis that road-users react more quickly to appealing symbols.

And now he has now grown into a something of a symbol of the new, reunited Berlin. And he's on my hat, a welcome present from Katja's mum.
