The Shepherd Is Right.
"Red sky in the morning. Shepherd’s warning."
This was the eastern sky at 5:50 this morning. The forecast was for moderate rain for most of the day, probably about 40mm.
I thought about the slipped slate that was allowing water to be where it should not, and the rhones still to be cleaned.
Looking at the rain radar map it seemed likely rain would reach us just after 8:00 a.m.
Although I had spoken to the roofing slater, he had pleaded he was working through a long list.
I was preparing breakfast at 8:05 when there was a knock at the door. We have a rabbit door knocker, of course.
Face mask on, I opened the door to find Cammie, full of smiles ready to clear the rhones and put back the slate.
Pleased to see him, I did warn him that rain was likely in the next hour.
"Yes, and it will be torrential. I will just get started."
And start he did. And once he started he continued to work until he finished." The work took about 2 hours.
Afterwards we had a socially distanced chat.
His uncle who had died suddenly in his sleep had much of the work schedule in his head.
Cammie and his son Craig are now putting everything on a proper basis and he assured me that we are on the Annual Job List.
Now Cammie’s Uncle Dougie was the third generation of the family. The work he produced was of a very high quality.
Pat and I were invited to the Centenary Celebration Dinner of the firm a few years ago.
Dougie died just before his 80th birthday. His one passion was fast sports cars.
He was working on a roof the day of his death.
That is some career.
