GATEWAY
Operating from 1847 until 1965, Stamford Bridge Station was one of the largest on the York to Market Weighton Railway. Main image shows the crossing gates, with the site of the demolished Signal Box across the road. Looking the other way . . . extra shows one of the platforms and the Main Goods Shed.
Out of sight is the fantastic viaduct that led trains into the station, now part of a grand cycleway from York which T and I enjoyed today.
Stamford Bridge is of considerable historical importance, including 1066 links. The Battle of Stamford Bridge took place on 25 September 1066, between an English army under King Harold Godwinson and an invading Norwegian force led by King Harald Hardrada. This was just 3 weeks before the Battle of Hastings. There is also considerable evidence of Viking and Roman settlements.
The Station House is becoming a local heritage centre with many artefacts about the area. Well worth a visit, only open on weekends at the moment.
Re yesterday . . . plenty of folk held up a torch for L . . . not sure why you were worried. I knew it was Mr H’s new shoes that were the problem . . . hehe
