The Green Man

I have been working my way through the five sculptures of the Lickey Hills Sculpture Trail. One of these I didn't know existed until we recently bought a booklet which describes the trail. Today I went out looking for it. It was quite difficult to find, even armed with a map of the trail, but I did eventually locate it.

I am glad I persevered because I reckon it is the best of them. Sculpted in 1996 by Ken Smith of Hereford, it is a representation of the Green Man, an ancient symbol of rebirth and the cycle of life. According to the description in the trail guide, the seats which flow from his mouth represent his song to the plants to encourage their growth through the seasons.

The other sculptures on the trial that I have previously blipped are the very unimpressive Alter, and the rather better Spirit of the Woods and Icarus.
