Food Box

Today at the food bank I was asked to put together a ‘kettle pack’ for someone in a hostel room recovering from facial surgery so the food had to be soft and could be prepared with hot water. Pot noodles, custard, rice pudding, jelly, milk, instant oats, tuna etc ... and a bowl, mug, tin opener and spoon.

Previously at the food bank I’d been involved in weighing in crates of donations and writing ‘best before’ dates clearly in marker pen on each item, but this request was so specific and personal that the reality of what the food bank does was clarified and I felt incredibly sad.

I hope he/she recovers well.
