Pendennis Castle Gatehouse, Cornwall

Pendennis Castle was built as part of Henry VIII's coastal defences, with its twin St Mawes Castle, to protect Carrick Roads, the harbour of Falmouth.

It was extended by Elizabeth in 1597 during the Spanish Wars and this Outer Gatehouse was built in 1611 and probably rebuilt in the early 18th Century.

Pendennis Castle was the last Royalist stronghold in the West of England and the Royalist garrison withstood a 5 month siege from March to August 1646, when it surrendered because of starvation.
