Woman's best friend

Friday

I struggled this morning, really struggled.
It's Richard's birthday and I wanted all the kids to see him and say happy birthday with me and watch him open his presents and cards at the same time before everyone went off for the day. Gemma wasn't coming home later, so I worked out we might have a ten minute window of opportunity before Joel went for his bus. But it didn't work out and I took it really badly. I am desperately short of sleep still, didn't sleep much last night and my throat is still hurting. I shut myself in the sitting room on my own for a few seconds and shouted in frustration at the air around me.
I missed breakfast, missed taking painkillers, and I got rained on when I walked Tess to school.

Richard is getting headaches and feeling woozy on and off. We dont know what's due to hefty antibiotics, the operation, the anaesthetic, the tiredness, or what?
I think he's secretly disappointed with the slowness of the recovery and how shitty he feels.
There's not a lot he's allowed to do and not a lot he feels like doing. But at least he can eat and breathe now and can nap on the sofa. It's got to be better than hospital.

After dropping Tess at school I took the dog for a walk and got hime to a phonecall from the school to say Tess was ill and needed picking up. I charged back down to the school and brought her back home. As I don't drive, the poor thing had to walk.
She's hot and cold, weak and achy.
I popped in and out of the sitting room for a couple of hours making sure Tes and Richard had everything they need on their respective sofas (luckily we have 2) and somehow, decorated the cake, walked the dog, tidied, cleaned the loo and got ready for a visit from Richard's sister and mum.

The singing around the cake was a bit pathetic without Tess and Gemma, and my throat is still sore, but Richard had managed to have a shower and a nap and put on a brave face for his visitors and was actually quite entertaining and good company.
He has a strange circular bruise (about the size of the end of a stethoscope) on his shoulder that appeared on Wednesday, and he joked about what might have happened to him while his was under anaesthetic.

I've found the pressure quite demanding today and having Tess ill was just bloody typical. It seems like someone or other in the family has been ill for forever and a day in our house and I really need to feel a bit lighter, and a bit weller (<- word)

Fortunately the sun came out for a while and I managed to sneak my camera out with me when I took the dog out. It's an extra strain having a dog at times like this but being forced to stride out onto the cold, wet, windy, slushy, mushy, muddy, hills and get battered by weather has probably kept me sane.
