That's fortune

Fu 福 in Chinese. It's inverted to create the interpretation that fortune has arrived. A very Chinese tradition of embracing a happy life. It's also a kind of decoration for households. 

It was written by a calligrapher who came with her wife as a visiting academic two years ago.
