Access Denied

Mr Flum suggested a foray into the Lost Garden Of Penicuik as it is some time since we last visited. Unfortunately the main gate was firmly padlocked against our entry.

However, we knew that we could probably use the rear access where the volunteers assemble, so walked round the main paths to the outbuildings. On our way we saw a fine house (whose name I have forgotten) possibly that allocated to the Head Gardener or even the Factor (estate manager) so took a peek at that (extra 1), noting the fine detailing and the date 1874 carved into the lintel.

And so we came to the Lost Garden, which appears extremely lost now, beset with weeds and grass surrounding the remaining specimens (extra 2). A few herbs - marjoram and mint, rhubarb and the remains of a crop of blackcurrants which we joyously scrumped on and picked a few for our tea. We found a single unusual white raspberry (extra 3 - I added a snail for fun).

It was sad to see but it must be remembered that such a garden would have required a small army of gardeners in its heyday and if sufficient volunteers are not available then nature will take over.
