The city gates
From the 16th century until 1970, Muscat was a walled city whose gates were locked every day at sunset, and where any citizen failing to carry a lantern after nightfall was soon arrested. The progressive late Sultan Qaboos had a hole driven into the city walls in the 1970s, allowing cars in, but Muscat’s gates were still locked every night until they were replaced with archways.
