Bonfires and Stake Burning
Most people will have heard about the famous Lewes Bonfire night parade.
What a lot of people don't know is that it celebrates the persecution of Protestant Martyrs burnt for their adherence to their Protestant Faith.
Such public burning of Protestant Martyrs occurred right across Sussex
Three such Martyrs were burnt in the High Street in East Grinstead on 18th July 1556 you can read about them here.
Their memorial stones have very recently be re-furbished and are very smart in the afternoon sunshine.
