Boroughbridge.

After packing the car up, on another hot and sunny day, we decided to stop off ar Boroughbridge on the way home, as we haven't been for ages.

A gem of a town. Now overlooked as people tend to visit Knaresborough, Harrogate, or Ripon.
This wasn't the case many years ago, when the Great North Road came through the town. The main road from London to Edinburgh, which crossed the River Ure here.
Mentioned in 1155 in the Latin form " pontem de Burgo".
At one point more than 2000 cattle per day passed through the town, and there were no fewer than 22 Inns.

Now it is bypassed by the A1 ( M)  and is a delightful quiet town, but still full of character.

The collage top left shows the blue plaque on the Crown Hotel. A 17th Century coaching Inn which had stabling for 100 horses.
Underneath a sign which is very up to date.

Un  fortunately we had just had coffee at a lovely little tea shop. May be next time

Top right is a photo of the River Ure, taken from the bridge.
Originally built in 1562 and widened a couple of times over the years.

Bottom  right the War Memorial in Hall Square.
The white marble figure on top represents Faith.

The centre photo is the Market Well in the centre of St Jame's Square. 
In 1875 the Lawson family from neighboring Aldborough, donated the present fanciful structure. A pump for public use . The well is 256 feet deep, and the structure grade 2 listed.

There is much more of the town to see, and we will certainly be back another day when we have more time.

Lovely end to what has been a very enjoyable few days.
Looking forward to going again in the near future.
