Do you hear the people sing?

One of my 'things to do in 2013' was to revive the Friday Night Film Club. Two weeks ago we went to see Zero Dark Thirty. It seems my tolerance of disturbing subject matter is higher than the others, but a drink and dinner afterwards helped. This week Anna chose Les Miserables at The Ultimate Picture Palace, Oxford's lovely independent cinema.

I thought I would hate it - Mamma Mia! all over again with shallow plots lines and bad singing - but I actually quite enjoyed it. Russell Crowe was well cast as a humourless, self important bully Javert, Anne Hathaway, whom I'm also not really a fan of impressed me with her singing. But the star was clearly the little boy playing Gavroche.

Revolutionaries always have the best songs.
