Millstone country
Out and about in the Peak District , walking along one of the millstone edges close to Sheffield with two of my brothers and their partners . The plan was to walk amid the heather in its purple glory . The heather was in full bloom, adorning the landscape in huge swathes between the peaty bogs and outcrops of millstone .
We passed a surprising number of people carrying mattresses on their backs and were puzzled until we realised that they were out to do some bouldering.
A dangerous hobby in my experience as our children were avid climbers of trees, walls, fences and suitably large outcrops of rock without incident . However , son no 1 fell off a bouldering wall and broke his ankle due to missing the mat . Not to be outdone son no 2 fell from the top of a faulty wall breaking both arms and bones in both feet .
The millstone in the photo was one of twenty or so that had been finished and then abandoned, we wondered if the market for them had suddenly disappeared, all that effort from people probably living on a shoe string and then no financial reward .
Anyway , we had a lovely day of catching up with loved ones and finished with a paddle in the cool waters of Burbage brook .
