Gunthwaite Barn
A hot sunny day ad we enjoyed a 5-6 mile, circular walk from Hoylandswaine to Gunthwaite. The photos are of the mediaeval barn at Gunthwaite which was built in 1500 and continues to be in use today in this big farm. The extra image shows the beams in part of the barn - note the wooden pegs that hold the beams together.
The origins of the name Gunthwaite are from the Old Norse feminine name of Gunhild. The old hall was built by the Bosvilles, who were the most important family in the area and originated from Normandy in 1066 with William the Conqueror.
