Oum Kaltoum

'The voice of Egypt'. 1904-1975. This statue is on a roundabout near the hotel and I pass it on the way back and forward to school. I wanted to add a link to one of her songs, but the internet connection in the hotel's a bit too slow for that.

I had a lie in this morning and breakfast in the hotel. Got a nice surprise when Nuri, the lovely Egyptian cleaning girl for this floor in the hotel came to my door with an ice bucket of flowers for my room. At first I thought they were a pressie from the hotel for being a long stay guest, but then I think I understood that she took them from a guest's room who had checked out and left the flowers behind! A little act of kindness and much appreciated. I then wandered around the streets of Zamalek with one eye open for ideas for a birthday pressie for Bb, as it's coming up soon. Had dinner in a little Italian restaurant just round the corner and about to go to bed now.
