Getting The Miles Up
Today was IKEA Day, a 220 mile round trip to purchase lots of interesting things we didn’t know we needed, with meatballs in gravy with jam!
Joshua needs to get to the required mileage in order to get his car serviced before his leave finishes, it’s easier here than Scotland hence the journey.
I slept for most of the journey to Exeter but Josh trusted me with his car for the return. A good bit different from my little Polo.
Atop a 66 foot tall Tourmaline granite outcrop looking out at the atmospheric Bodmin Moor and china clay “mountains” of St. Austell is Roche Rock Hermitage. This ruined chapel, built in 1409, is dedicated to Saint Michael and has been surrounded by myth and mystery for hundreds of years.
According to local folklore, a hermit and his daughter once lived within the rocky structure.
What is known is the hermitage was last occupied by a family of local landowners who, when they contracted leprosy, stayed here to avoid infecting the village of Roche.
The hermitage has two floors, with the top room originally serving as the chapel. Although the west wall is all but gone, the east wall still stands at almost its full, original height.
This was the penultimate stop on Samantha’s birthday day out.
