Dunmanus Castle
Once home to Donagh Mor O Mahoney, built around 1430, guarding Denman's Bay. A tower house really, standing on a rocky outcrop and pretty well preserved. Inside the castle had three storeys, and the corner tower had five. The walls are very thick and the interior ceiling arched. The windows are just tiny slits. There is also a dungeon, suitably dank and dark. The floor area is pretty small and there were no signs of any fireplaces so you'd have had to be pretty tough to live here.
What a gorgeous day. The sun has been shining. I met TJ for lunch, and we ate huge sandwiches on the beach. It actually felt warm and the colours were magnificent. On my way home an adventure beckoned. Dunmanus Castle was actually the second of the day. I also ventured to Ardinenet Castle, down tiny winding lanes. A bad dog was a bit close for comfort but I ventured nearer and as I got closer the smell got stronger - animal smell. The lower room of the castle had a bit of corrugated iron slung across it and behind it nestled a cow and her tiny calf. The castle may have been ruined but it still had its uses.
If you look on the map, rather alarmingly the road veers out into the sea! It doesn't actually do that.
