Don't ask . . .
. . . I have no idea why the surf boats are on the roof of the Great Southern Hotel, save to say it's one of those pubs that delights in quirky embellishments and decor.
The hotel, in the New South Wales town of Berry, is, underneath its eccentricities, a traditional Aussie pub. Opened in 1887, it was once a double-storey building with cast-iron verandah railings, and stables where the car park is now. It was destroyed by fire in 1961 and was rebuilt using the lower part of the old building.
We often have a lunch break in beautiful Berry, and that's what we were doing there today on our way home to Batemans Bay from Sydney.
