Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Worn with History

This window frame really revealed its age and the weather-beaten life all the windows in this house had had here in this coastal community.

We suspect these are the original windows, maybe not the glass, but the windows frames that were installed when this house was built in 1942. In early December when our realtor sent us a attractive advertisement from "Window World" and suggested we at least get an estimate, we took her suggestion.

This morning two workers and a truck-load of windows arrived. These guys were late because there had been lots of traffic due to an accident on the #101 Freeway in San Luis Obispo. So mid-morning they got started on the older portion of the house's windows. We knew they would not be finished early.

Tomorrow they will replace the windows in the newer part of this house, the front sunroom, which is the room that convinced us that we wanted this house. The front windows provide a view of the entire Estero Bay from south of Morro Rock, beyond Montaña De Oro, and then north the view extends to the top of this bay. The view is absolutely spectacular and the new windows will help make it even more visible.

The windows will also keep the house warmer during the cold months and cooler in the late afternoons all year long when the sun is full blast against the front of the house. The windows will reduce outside noise from the street right in front of us and from California's Highway #1 which is behind the property.

This was a costly upgrade, but we think we've made a good investment. Because we purchased the house after it had been reduced in price by a considerable, actually huge amount, we felt we could begin to make some necessary improvements. There will be many more upgrades to come, and if they are all as satisfactory an improvement as this has been, we will be pleased.

This was a looooooooong day. We were both completely exhausted by early evening when the two workers said their "goodbyes and see you in the morning." Later as we crawled into bed, we both chuckled and said, "Gosh, putting in new windows is really a lot of work!" We think the three pooches thought so too because they had to stay in their crates almost the entire day. Whew!

Good night from the Central Coast where new windows are wonderful.
