Sand flies

These have achieved legendary status, a bit like the Scottish midge. However the Sandfly is a more powerful critter. It's bite lasts for weeks as I can testify. They are denizens of the West Coast through which we travelled today. So it was long trousers, sleeves and repellent on the bits that showed. I think it worked.
We came across this at The Bushman's Centre at Pukekura between Ross and Hokitika. The cafe is somewhat alternative. Those who live on the west coast have a reputation for being fiercely independent. Here notices proclaimed what would happen to politicians, CEOs of banks, businesses etc in terms of the French Revolution.
