Geology Quiz......
OK , quick quiz........ignoring the star fish there are three types of fossil here. Easy one for starters, Iron Pyrite Ammonites , Jurassic, found on Charmouth beach , Dorset. Beautifully preserved and shiny when you find them. Many a happy hour was spent on the lovely beach scrabbling about in mud. Also from Dorset , Charmouth is a piece of Icthyosaur vertebral column. Jet black and stony. The pits where the ribs would fit are just visible. I yelped with excitement , not ashamed to say. Both of these fossils are frequent finds. The last one, found by my friend Wendy , sat 2foot away from me on a beach on the Isle of Wight is the roof of a prehistoric fish mouth. The dotty bits being kind of teeth for grinding stuff. She is lovely Wendy. When she saw me looking enviously at her she donated it to my fossil collection!
Whenever we go hunting for fossils we always think we will find the next Icthyosaur. Usually I discover a bad back after all that bending. Must go back soon.
