one with the twigs

I always wondered why cute little white breasted nuthatches came with a smudgy brown streak from their bellies to their tail feathers.
In fact, I think that may be why they are always upside down - to hide that unsightly smudge.
But now I see how that mark helps them blend in with the twigs when they are belly side up.
