Day 3 Colle di Val d’Elsa to Siena
A short ride of 19 miles today but as it was nearly all on gravel in 36 degrees that was just as well. We stopped for lunch at Monteriggioni, a beautiful hilltop castle. Again somewhere that I feel would be far more touristy than we found it. Then more gravel grinding on the Via Francigina into beautiful Siena. The gravel roads are ok, better than yesterday’s where a tractor had been over the hard core and left it’s tyre tread permanently making the road very bumpy. Our host in Siena had a cancellation so kindly upgraded us to a bigger apartment which is 10 meters off the Piazza del Campo in the very centre of town. We have 2 nights here. We walked to the coop, I love foreign supermarkets and bought breakfast and dinner for the next few days.Even the locals are complaining about the heat.
