Kellaways (Sunday 26th July 2020)

Apparently this huge field was sown with sunflowers on 26th April. I lost count but I think there are easily more than a dozen ;-). I wasn't the only person to think of taking a look at these today, in fact it was difficult finding anywhere to park on this normally deserted road. The field is adjacent to a raised section of Maud Heath's Causeway and runs alongside the River Avon as it meanders towards Chippenham. I walked along a stretch of it, but this wide-angle view was taken from the Causeway. I found a lone swan amongst the reeds, until it was scared away by a splashing barking dog that a stupid owner had encouraged into the river, and plenty of wildflowers.

Today's Now Playing show on 6 Music obviously had to be dedicated to Peter Green and this was one of the tracks played. I remember buying her single It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry  at the time (backed by Chicken Shack, featuring Christine McVie on keyboards and Stan Webb's guitar, with whom she shared a producer, Mike Vernon) because it was a Dylan song, when I found it going for 2/- at Walsall Market, and later bought the parent album Fiends And Angels, from which this comes. It had lots of big names playing on it as you can see, also including Paul Kossoff and Jim Capaldi.
Martha Veléz was from New York of Puerto Rican heritage and had played the lead in Hair on Broadway as well as auditioning to be the singer in Big Brother and the Holding Company (she lost out to Janis Joplin) before settling in London for a while, and clearly had some heavyweight connections. She later made an album with Bob Marley.
