The London Eye
The London Eye or Millenium Wheel is the cantilevered observation wheel on London's South Bank which opened in the year 2000.But long before then there was another London Eye - it was the name Petiver gave in 1717 to the butterfly now known as the Wall (Moses, 1766) or Wall Brown (Kirby 1896). London Eye wasn't Petiver's first attempt to name this species. In 1699 he had called it the Golden Marbled Butterfly. Other names for the Wall have included Great Argus (1749), Orange Argus (1795), Gatekeeper (1819) and Speckled Wall (1853). I found this solitary second brood male while searching unsuccessfully for Silver-studded Skippers on the Downs above Lewes.
