BRIDGE

Back into Scarborough again - emergency dental appointment - ouch !

Scarborough, UK is split between the north and south sides of the town. Whilst accessible by visitors walking along the South Bay seafront, there was a deep descent to the seafront from the St. Nicholas Cliff area of the town.

In 1826 The Cliff Bridge Company proceeded to erect an elegant iron footbridge to span the chasm of the valley to the Spa. On 19th July 1827 the bridge it was formally opened. The bridge is a valuable link from St. Nicholas Cliff to the Spa and to the Holbeck area of town.

Towering 23 metres from the valley below, the bridge is 126 metres long.
It still provides excellent promenade and wonderful views for those wishing to while away a few hours by the sea.

The bridge had a toll-booth at the St. Nicholas Cliff end, but now any crossing is for free !
