St Bride's Church

This picture combines two things that will be a constant throughout my year of blipping.

Firstly using this to discover more about Fleet Street and the fascinating area where I work and secondly my love of a good fact!

So this is St Bride's Church - located on Fleet Street and designed by Sir Christopher Wren.

The good fact links this church with wedding cakes.

The origin of the tiered cake dates back to 1703 when Thomas Rich, a baker's apprentice from Ludgate Hill, fell in love with his boss's daughter and asked her to marry him.

He wanted to surprise his bride by creating something spectacular for her on their wedding day and found inspiration from the steeple of St Bride's Church.

The multi-tiered cake he created was the first of its kind but is now the most common form of wedding cake.
