Bridge of Dee

The original Bridge of Dee was replaced in 1719 and resulted in the construction of this bridge in the subsequent five years. Although the bridge was widened in 1840 the appearance of the bridge was maintained. Thus this is substantially the original 300 year old bridge.

It carries a large volume of traffic as it lies on one of the main routes in or out of Aberdeen to or from the south. The opening of the Aberdeen bypass a couple of years ago will have meant through traffic no longer comes this way, so has reduced the volume of traffic. It is also closed to trucks, aside from weight issues it is also too narrow for large vehicles.

The picture was taken on a rather cool morning in Aberdeen, though it became much warmer in the afternoon when the cloud cleared.
