Hopeful tree

I often pass this tough old tree. It has obviously suffered many indignities over the years. All its lower branches have been lopped off, and creatures that build webs live in its scars. Someone has nailed a red reflector to its trunk, which suggests that people run into it.

Undaunted, the hopeful tree continues to put out green shoots. Sometimes I give it a pat to encourage it.
