Seedbed Preparation, Homewoodgate Farm

Stopping by Homewoodgate Farm this afternoon for a brief photographic stroll along the footpath, I was first of all slightly taken aback to see that the field had been ploughed since my last visit here just four days ago - I have no clear memory of it as anything but a sheepfield - and was then intrigued to see that the field was in the process of being worked to break down the enormous clods that the plough had turned up.

This photograph shows a piece of the action, taken at a safe distance from the footpath along the side of the field, as the tractor turned at the head of a row. It was an impressive sight: the field being levelled by a three-section field roller with a spring-tine 'crackerboard' in front to prepare the ground in a single pass.
