Today’s trip down to Maldon prom .... Friday evening stroll to blow the cobwebs away.
Maldon :
1. A market town in South East Essex
2. Scene of a battle (991) between the East Saxons and the victorious Danes, celebrated in The Battle of Maldon, an Old English poem
3. Notable for Maldon salt, used in cookery
4. Population : 20 731
5. Maldon's name comes from mǣl meaning 'monument or cross' and dūn meaning 'hill', so translates as 'monument hill'
6. East Saxons settled the area in the 5th century and the area to the south is still known as the Dengie Peninsula after the Dæningas. It became a significant Saxon port with a hythe or quayside and artisan quarters.
7. From 958 there was a royal mint issuing coins for the late Anglo-Saxon and early Norman kings.
I’m now at the end of my Maldon knowledge .....
