In my opinion, Michael Schumacher is probably the best F1 driver of recent times, with seven world championships. This signed model celebrating that feat is one of my prized possessions. At one point I was worried it might be out of date when he came out of retirement to drive for Mercedes - maybe there would be an eighth world championship? Sadly it was not to be as the Mercedes he drove was nothing like the dominant machine which Hamilton drove last year to secure his sixth world title.
After many months wait, the Formula 1 season finally got under way today and if Hamilton wants to equal Schumacher’s tally then he needs to do a lot better over the next few races. Still not sure how meaningful this years Championship is going to be. Only 8 races confirmed so far, mainly double headers, and a vague suggestion that more rounds might be added later in the year depending on how the pandemic is going. If you win a championship after only eight races, does it really count? In my opinion - not really. Let’s hope more rounds can be added later in the year so that whoever wins, it is something meaningful.
Bad result for Lewis but great to see Lando Norris getting a podium due to a brilliant last lap enabling him to get past Hamilton on adjusted times. The person I feel sorry for is Albon - could have been a great result if not for that coming together.
Very strange watching F1 without all the crowds and hangers on. The racing was the same, it was just all the pre and post race action that looked a bit weird. And I’m not a 100% sure what their rules are regarding the masks - why they were needed for the interviews when everyone was outside and more than 2m apart? And there was a lot of fiddling with masks during interviews, surely compromising their effectiveness.
It will be interesting to see what happens in seven days time when they run the next race over the same track. Will it be the same result? Lessons will surely have been learnt today so hopefully that might mix things up a bit.
