Bakewell Castle

The snow is back and this morning we had a little walk up to castle hill in Bakewell as Janet had never seen the castle. There's not much to see of the castle and all that remains is the mound, but the view over Bakewell is great.
Bakewell Castle is a 12th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress, possibly founded during the Anarchy, in the reign of King Stephen. The motte has a shallow depression in the top and is partly encased by a ditch, which divides it from its large bailey. With a rubble rampart of an earlier but undetermined date, the probably square bailey maybe a small thengal burh. Excavations between 1969 and 1971, found only intermittent occupation of the castle. 2 miles south is Haddon Hall and 8 miles south-west is Pilsbury Castle.
