Kennebec River
Since I speak of this wonderful friend often, I thought I would honor it today by making it my blip, and taking the opportunity to tell you a bit more about it • Meet the Kennebec River, named by the Native American Tribe who originally settled here, the Eastern Abenaki. Kennebec means “large body of still water, large bay” • The tidal river runs southward from Moose Head Lake in west central Maine through the Merry Meeting Bay in to the Gulf of Maine in the North Atlantic Ocean • It’s 170 miles long and hosts a variety of fish: herring, bass, salmon, shad, alewives, eel and sturgeon. No wonder eagles, herons, ospreys and cormorants summer here, and both seagulls and mallards call this home year around • This river view was taken from the Boat Landing, where we often enjoy eating a picnic breakfast, walking the boardwalk and trail, and bird watching • This river is why we live here. It runs through us.
