Leeds old and new Day 1: Outstretched hands
This week I have decided to do a theme to keep me focused and since I don't know too much about the history and culture of the city I live in I thought I would do "Leeds old and new".
Just around the corner from my office is Millennium Square (a flagship project built for the millennium). Nelson Mandela appeared on the square in 2001 to open the adjoining Nelson Mandela gardens. He famously thanked the crowds and said how happy he was to be in Liverpool. Oops.
On the square is a 16ft high bronze sculpture of outstretched hands, by the Leeds-born sculptor Kenneth Armitage. Behind it you can see Leeds Civic Hall opened by King George V in 1933.
